FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Farm Management Plans and rural planning applications.

Do I need a Farm Management Plan?

Not every rural planning application requires one. Whether an FMP is needed depends on the zoning, proposal, relevant planning policy and what information the responsible authority needs to assess the application.

If council has asked for one - or you are unsure - send us the property address and details of the proposal.

Can you tell me whether I need one before I pay for a full report?

Usually, yes. Send the property address, a short description of the proposal and any council correspondence or request for further information. We can review the basics before confirming the full scope.

What information do you need from me?

Useful information includes the property address, any council correspondence, site/building plans, details of current agricultural activities, details of the proposed enterprise and any existing property maps. Do not worry if you do not have everything.

Does an FMP guarantee that council will approve my application?

No. A Farm Management Plan is supporting material. The responsible authority considers the complete application against the relevant planning scheme and other requirements.

Can an FMP help with a proposed dwelling in the Farming Zone?

Yes. In many Farming Zone dwelling applications, an FMP can help demonstrate how the proposed dwelling supports the agricultural use of the property. It can explain the farm enterprise, its management requirements and the practical relationship between the dwelling and the ongoing agricultural use of the land.

How much does a Farm Management Plan cost?

The amount of work varies significantly between properties and applications. We provide a clear quote after the initial review of the property and proposal.

How long does it take?

Timing depends on the complexity of the property, available information, whether a site visit is useful or required, and whether other specialist work is involved. We provide an expected timeframe with the quote.

Do you work throughout Victoria?

Yes. We are based in South West Victoria and work with rural properties across Victoria. Travel costs may apply where a site visit is required outside the normal service area.

What is the difference between a Farm Management Plan and a Land Management Plan?

A Farm Management Plan generally focuses strongly on agricultural use and operation and may support a rural planning proposal. A Land Management Plan usually focuses more directly on how the land itself will be managed over time - for example weeds, pest animals, vegetation, waterways, erosion and pasture.

What if I also need a BAL, BMS or Land Capability Assessment?

Tell us at the beginning. We can identify obvious related requirements during the initial review and either confirm current service availability or assist with referral to an appropriate specialist.
